Be the Host(ess) with the Most(est)

I single-handedly pioneered our program's first campus-wide newsletter. They are published on a weekly basis via MyEmma. There is a featured department theme, as well as news and campus events that are alternatives to the party scene of UCSB. This article is a guide about Deltopia, the community's most infamous event of the year.

Welcome back everyone! The arguably most exciting quarter of the year is upon us. From Extravaganza to graduation to just sunnier skies in general, there is a lot about to be hyped about for spring! There's no down time before the festivities begin. Students are anticipating Deltopia right after spring break. There's a reason why it’s the most well-known event to the UCSB community.

Are you hosting a party this weekend? Here are some important tips to keep your first weekend back smooth sailing:

  1. Keep it local. There will be numerous restrictions and patrols by authorities in Isla Vista. Try to keep your fun within the UCSB community; that means bringing overly excited out-of-towners can cause things to get out of hand.

  2. Have a sober host or point person. Identify one or several friends to remain sober throughout the day to monitor the party, resolve potential issues, and speak to police if they were to show up.

  3. Don't make binge drinking the main theme. While students do tend to partake in day drinking activities, remember to provide food and non-alcoholic beverages, especially plenty of water, for guests to stay within a healthy blood alcohol content (BAC). Also, remember to keep all cups and drinks inside the house!

  4. Take care of your friends. Make sure your friends don't walk home alone! Make sure that you, a sober friend, or a CSO is able to accompany them. If they are too intoxicated, set them up on a bed or couch in a safe position for the night. Check up on them frequently. If at any point you're worried about someone being dangerously drunk or experiencing an overdose, call 911.
